Health Promotion & Rehabilitation Lab

A graphic showing the cyclical relationship between health promotion, psychosocial adjustment, and social participation

Welcome to the Health Promotion and Rehabilitation Laboratory in the Department of Kinesiology and Community Health at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

The Health Promotion & Rehabilitation Lab is coordinated by Dr. Chung-Yi Chiu. Our overarching research goals are to understand how people with disability and chronic illness (PwDC) live healthy, meaningful, and productive lives.

Our lab model begins with Health Promotion, including a balanced lifestyle with exercise, diet, and mental health. However, when life challenges or disease interrupts that balance, people will need a Psychosocial Adjustment to cope with their challenge or disability. If that Psychosocial Adjustment does not occur, then their Social Participation may suffer while they are adapting to their disability or other challenges.
